Why did my builder put the furnace in such a small closet?

Because the unit is certified for zero clearance to combustibles, so a tight closet is code compliant, and floor space in a new Calgary home is valuable. It is a normal trade off rather than a mistake. The consequence is simply that servicing needs a technician who works from the front and knows the equipment.
