The Gradient Warranty: What It Covers, and What It Asks of You

Ten years on the heat exchanger, five on parts, and a registration window most owners miss. What Gradient's warranty actually covers, in the document's own words.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

A Gradient syncFURNACE Tankless carries ten years on the heat exchanger against a defect causing a leak, and five years on the burner, pumps, valves, controller and motors. Registering the unit within sixty days of installation extends that five year parts coverage to ten. All of it is granted on one condition, repeated in every paragraph: that regular maintenance is carried out and documented in accordance with the product manual. That is the part worth knowing about, because it is the part you control.

What you have

On the boiler document the covered part is called the Pressure Vessel, not the heat exchanger. It is the same thing described in the language that document uses: the stainless vessel that holds the water and takes the flame. Gradient’s own boiler manual titles its specification appendix “Pressure Vessel and Internal Pump Specifications”. The Tankless document says Heat Exchanger for the equivalent part.

Both the Tankless periods also carry an operating hours cap, stated in the document’s footnotes: five years or 7,500 hours, and ten years or 15,000 hours, whichever comes first. The boiler document has no hours cap.

Check which revision applies to you. Each document is stamped with the manufacturing date it covers. 111251 R04 is valid for product manufactured after 1 May 2025. 110186 R05 and 110698 R01 are valid for product manufactured after 1 October 2019. If your unit was made before the date on the current document, the terms that apply are the ones in the revision that shipped with it, which may differ. If you still have the paperwork that came with the house, keep it. For an older unit that document is your warranty, not the one on the website today.

All three documents, and the product manuals, are published on Gradient’s guides and manuals page. We would rather you read them than take our word for any of this.

The condition attached to all of it

Every coverage paragraph in the policy carries the same clause:

“provided regular maintenance is carried out and documented in accordance with the Product manual(s)”

And the claims terms add:

“The Product must have been properly maintained during the Warranty period and in the intervals in accordance with the Product manual(s). Service records and support documentation is required to support maintenance claims.”

Most manufacturers write their warranties this way. What makes it worth acting on rather than worrying about is that both halves are easy to satisfy: get the unit serviced annually, and keep the paperwork. Gradient’s manual even supplies the form, Appendix E, the Annual Inspection and Maintenance Record, a single sheet with a column for every year from installation to year ten. We fill it in on every visit and leave it with you. Photograph it and keep it with your house documents.

Registration, and the sixty day window

The policy extends the five year parts coverage by a further five years:

“If the Certified Contractor or Original Owner registers the Product with Gradient … within SIXTY (60) DAYS from the Original Date of Installation, Gradient will extend the coverage defined in the LIMITED FIVE (5) YEAR WARRANTY COVERAGE by an additional FIVE (5) YEARS.”

Three things sit inside that clause that a one line summary leaves out. The window is sixty days from installation, not from possession. The extension is for a residential installation. And it is not available where the unit was used to provide temporary construction heat, which the manual covers in its own appendix. On a new build the last one is worth asking your builder about, because using the permanent heating appliance to heat the house while it is being finished is not uncommon.

Note who is allowed to do it: the installing contractor or the owner. On a unit we install, we register it inside the window as part of the job. If your unit is newer than sixty days and nobody has registered it yet, it is a free form and we will walk you through it.

What the warranty does not cover

None of this is unusual, and none of it is hidden. It is simply that nobody reads a warranty until they need it.

Labour is not covered. Parts are. As with most manufacturers in this industry, Gradient supplies the covered component and the cost of fitting it is yours. A ten year heat exchanger warranty means a heat exchanger, which is worth knowing when you are budgeting.

It does not transfer with the house. The policy is for the benefit of the first purchaser at retail on the original site of installation, and states that it “is not assignable”. Again, common across the industry, and worth knowing if you are buying or selling.

You have seventy two hours to report a defect from the occurrence or discovery of it.

Rental changes it. A residential rental property counts as a COMMERCIAL INSTALLATION under this policy, and the big part is covered for five years there rather than ten.

Some components are excluded outright, listed in the document as sheetmetal cabinet parts, combustion chamber linings and insulation, cabinet insulation, gaskets, O rings, air filters, fuses and surge protection devices.

The Calgary part: hard water

Similarly to other tankless water heaters, hard water is not great on equipment, and Calgary water is hard. The policy does exclude damage caused by water that does not meet Gradient’s water quality requirements, so it is worth knowing about rather than worrying about.

Gradient recommends water treatment to keep the equipment running efficiently and to get the longevity out of it, and their system drawings suggest an inline sediment filter, a softener, or both. It looks after the dishwasher and the fixtures at the same time. See water softeners in Calgary, and the annual service for the flush and descale that keeps scale out of a syncFURNACE Tankless.

Where we come in

On any visit we are already making, we will read the model and serial off the rating plate and work out which of the three documents applies to your unit and when the coverage started. If we cannot answer something on the spot, we will find out or show you where to look. Then we complete the Appendix E record so the documentation condition is satisfied from that point forward. That second part is the one that matters, because it applies to every year of coverage you have.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Gradient syncFURNACE warranty?

On the current Tankless policy, ten years on the heat exchanger for a defect resulting in a leak, and five years on the burner, pumps, valves, controller and motors. Both are also capped by operating hours: five years or 7,500 hours, and ten years or 15,000 hours, whichever comes first. Registering the unit within sixty days of installation extends the five year parts coverage to ten. The syncFURNACE Boiler and GCx carry five years on components and ten years on the pressure vessel, which is that document’s term for the equivalent part, with no hours cap and no registration extension.

Does skipping maintenance void a Gradient warranty?

Gradient’s warranty grants coverage “provided regular maintenance is carried out and documented in accordance with the Product manual(s)”, and its claims terms state that service records are required to support a maintenance claim. So both the work and the record matter, which is ordinary for manufacturer warranties. A unit with a complete service history is in a much better position than one with none.

Can I still register my Gradient to get the ten year parts warranty?

Only if it was installed within the last sixty days. The policy extends the five year parts coverage by another five years if the product is registered “within SIXTY (60) DAYS from the Original Date of Installation”. Either the installing contractor or the owner can submit it, and it is free.

Does the Gradient warranty transfer when I sell my house?

No. The policy is for the benefit of the first purchaser at retail on the original site of installation only, and it states that the warranty “is not assignable”. That is common across the industry rather than unusual to Gradient. If you bought a home with a Gradient already installed, you are not the Original Owner under that document.

Does the warranty cover labour?

No. Gradient supplies covered parts, and the cost of diagnosing, removing and fitting them is yours, including shipping. Most manufacturer warranties in this industry are written the same way. So a ten year heat exchanger warranty means a heat exchanger, not a free repair.

How quickly do I have to report a problem?

Within seventy two hours of the occurrence or discovery of the defect. Call us as soon as you notice something. We will come and verify what is actually happening, and once we have, we notify Gradient the same day.

What records do I need for a Gradient warranty claim?

Service records and support documentation for the maintenance performed in the required intervals. Gradient’s manual includes an Appendix E Annual Inspection and Maintenance Record, which is the form the manufacturer can ask for. We complete it on every visit and leave it with you.
