Gradient syncFURNACE units are certified for zero clearance to combustibles, which is why a home
can be built with the unit in a compact closet rather than a mechanical room. Gradient’s own manual
separately recommends 24 inches of front clearance and 12 inches above the unit for service access,
and most closets do not have it. The unit is designed to be serviced entirely from the front, so it
can be done properly in a tight space, but it takes a technician who knows the platform. 180

Why your furnace closet is so small
Here are the two clearance rows from Gradient’s own installation manual. Both come from the
manufacturer, and the gap between them explains your closet completely.
| Clearance | Front | Back | Sides | Top | Bottom | Vent pipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum, to combustibles | 0 in | 0 in | 0 in | 0 in | 0 in | 0 in |
| Recommended for service | 24 in | 2 in | 2 in | 12 in | 0 in | 1 in |
And Gradient’s note underneath, in their words:
“It is highly suggested that Recommended for Service minimum clearance requirements are
maintained to ensure straight forward access for future product service / maintenance.”
Zero inches is a fire rating. Twenty four inches is a service recommendation. Your builder only
had to meet the first one.
That is not a scandal and it is not a mistake. Floor space in a new Calgary home is worth real
money, the appliance is certified to sit tight to the framing, and giving up two feet of floor in
front of a furnace is a genuinely difficult trade to justify at design stage. It is a normal
decision with a predictable consequence, and the consequence is simply that servicing the unit
needs someone who works from the front and knows the equipment.
What it means when a company says they cannot service it
Four things are usually going on, and none of them mean your equipment is a problem.
- They have not opened one before. Gradient is a Calgary manufacturer with a modest install
base. Most technicians in this city genuinely have not worked on one, and a tight closet is a bad
place to learn. - They are looking for side or rear access out of habit. On a conventional furnace that is
where you go. On this unit almost everything is reached from the front. - They do not stock or cannot quickly source the parts.
- Some will quote to remove and reinstall the unit. On a front serviceable appliance in a
closet that meets code, that is usually unnecessary, and it is an expensive quote to receive.
How we service a unit in a tight closet
This is the part that is worth being specific about, because specificity is the only way to tell
the difference between a company that does this and a company that says it does.
- Front access to the burner, combustion chamber and condensate trap. The unit is built for it.
- Condensate trap cleaning, and the drain cleared from the heat exchanger outlet through to the
floor drain. This is the single most common cause of a lockout in Calgary homes. - Annual water system flush and descale. The item most often skipped, and the one Calgary’s
hard water makes non negotiable. - Filter change in the correct size for your model. The 05L, 08L, 06H, 10L, 12L and 10H take a
16×25. The 16L, 15H and 20L take a 20×25. All are 14 inches high by 23 inches deep. - Combustion analysis and a full gas safety check by a Certified Type B Gasfitter.
- Gradient’s Appendix E Annual Inspection and Maintenance Record completed and left with you,
because Gradient’s warranty requires maintenance to be documented, not just done.
What we will tell you honestly
If your closet genuinely cannot be serviced safely, we will say so. It is rare, but it happens,
usually where a door opening is narrower than the cabinet or where something has been built in
front of the unit after the fact. When it happens we will tell you exactly what it would take to
fix, which is normally a wider or louvred access door. That is a carpentry job rather than a
mechanical one, and it costs far less than people expect.
The unit cannot be installed on carpeting. That is the manufacturer’s instruction, not our
preference. If yours is sitting on carpet, it is worth knowing and worth correcting.
We will not quote you to pull the unit out to do work that is designed to be done from the
front.
If you are in a townhome
This is worth its own section, because a townhome is a completely different situation from a
detached house and almost nobody explains it.
Your neighbours almost certainly have the identical unit in an identical closet. Townhome rows
are built to one mechanical design. Gradient’s own case study of a Calgary townhome describes a
tandem garage with a double door closet leading to the mechanical room under the stairs, chosen
because the syncFURNACE fits lengthwise under a staircase while still leaving access to the HRV and
the electrical panel. If that description matches your home, you know what you have.
Your whole complex is due at the same time. The units were commissioned within weeks of each
other when the row was built, so the warranty clock started at roughly the same moment for
everybody. If you are overdue, your neighbours are too, and none of you have been told.
So book together and it costs less. It is genuinely cheaper for us to service six units in one
complex than six houses scattered across the southeast. We park once, we already know the model,
the closet and the drain layout, and there is no drive time between jobs. That saving is real, so
we pass it on.
Ask your neighbours. If a few of you book on the same morning we will do the row in one visit.
Call 403-404-9975 and say which complex you are in, and we will tell you what it looks like for
your group.
If you sit on the board, or you manage the property, we can also arrange servicing for the
whole complex on one schedule, with a single record for each unit and one point of contact. Call
and ask for Desmond.
New home, new unit, and nobody has ever serviced it
If your home is new, four things are worth knowing and nobody has told you any of them.
- Your warranty is ten years on the heat exchanger and five on parts, and every one of those
coverage paragraphs is conditional on maintenance being carried out and documented. Gradient’s
claims terms ask for the service records. - Registration had a sixty day window. Gradient extends the five year parts coverage to ten
only if the unit was registered within sixty days of installation. On most units already in
the ground that window has closed, and anyone telling you otherwise has not read the policy.
We will tell you what coverage you actually have. - The builder’s warranty and the manufacturer’s warranty are different documents with
different terms and different timelines. Alberta new home warranty covers the building. The
furnace warranty is Gradient’s. - Your first service is due one year from installation, not from possession. On a new build
those can be months apart, which is why a lot of owners are already late without realising.

straight to the annual service.
Where we work
We cover southeast Calgary. The communities we are in most often include
Auburn Bay, Cranston, Seton,
Mahogany, Legacy, Walden,
New Brighton, Copperfield,
McKenzie Towne, Chaparral.
If your complex is not on that list, call anyway. We travel across the southeast and we would
rather tell you honestly whether we are the right people than have you keep phoning around.
Booking it
Call 403-404-9975. Tell us the model number off the rating plate if you can find it, or send a
photo by text and we will tell you what you have.
What is free
A Gradient warranty check. We confirm your model, tell you when your first documented service
was actually due, check whether the unit is registered, and leave you the manufacturer’s record
form. No charge, no obligation, and useful to you whether or not you ever book anything else.
How we price this work
We charge by the job, not by the hour. Hourly billing punishes you when a job turns out to be
complicated and punishes us for being quick, so we price the job. You get one number for the
finished work, agreed before anything starts and always in writing. Parts, labour, disposal and
permits are in the number you agreed. If we find something else once we are in, we stop and
re-quote, and you decide.
Frequently asked questions
My furnace is in a tiny closet. Can it still be serviced?
Almost always, yes. Gradient syncFURNACE units are designed to be serviced entirely from the front, so a technician does not need side or rear access. Gradient recommends 24 inches of front clearance and 12 inches above for service work, and many builder framed closets have less than that. It is still workable for someone who knows the platform.
How much clearance does a Gradient syncFURNACE need?
Two different numbers, and the difference is the whole answer. The unit is certified for zero inches to combustible material on all sides, which is a fire rating and is why closets can be framed tight. Gradient’s manual separately recommends 24 inches at the front and 12 inches above for service access. A builder only has to meet the first one.
Why did my builder put the furnace in such a small closet?
Because the unit is certified for zero clearance to combustibles, so a tight closet is code compliant, and floor space in a new Calgary home is valuable. It is a normal trade off rather than a mistake. The consequence is that servicing needs a technician who works from the front and knows the equipment.
An HVAC company said they cannot service my furnace. What now?
Usually it means they have not worked on that platform before. Gradient is a Calgary manufacturer with a modest install base, so most technicians genuinely have not opened one. The unit is front serviceable and the work is routine once you know it. We service Gradient units in tight closets across southeast Calgary.
Do you have to pull the unit out of the closet to service it?
No. On a Gradient syncFURNACE the burner, combustion chamber, condensate trap and filter are all reached from the front. Removing and reinstalling a front serviceable appliance in order to service it is almost never necessary.
I live in a townhome. Do my neighbours have the same unit?
Very probably. Townhome rows are built to one mechanical design, so the same model usually sits in the same closet in every unit, often in a mechanical room under the stairs off the garage. They were also commissioned within weeks of each other, which means the whole row is due for service at roughly the same time.
Can you service several units in our complex at once?
Yes, and it costs less when we do. Servicing six units in one complex is cheaper for us than six scattered houses, because there is no drive time and we already know the model, the closet and the drain layout. Call 403-404-9975 with your complex and we will tell you what a group booking looks like.
Can a Gradient syncFURNACE sit on carpet?
No. The installation manual states the product cannot be installed on carpeting. If yours is, mention it when you book and we will look at it during the service.
When is the first service due on a brand new Gradient?
One year from installation, not from your possession date. On a new build those can be months apart, so a number of owners are already overdue without realising. Gradient’s warranty requires maintenance to be carried out and documented annually.
