Water softeners contain resin beads that have either sodium or potassium ions attached. When the hard water passes through the appliance and makes contact with the beads, the ions from the water are exchanged with the sodium or potassium ions. Softeners require regeneration with salt and water to continue this process and most new water softeners will use the salt very efficiently reducing the impacts on the environment and your wallet.
